Park Signs

Also known as Park Entrance signs, Play Area signs

Overview of Product
Parks are an important of our landscape in both urban and rural environments and parks play an increasingly important role in meeting the health and exercise objectives of Government.  Parks are often held in great affection by local residents and it is important that any upgrading of their street furniture and signage is undertaken in a sympathetic and appropriate style.  The wide range of material and framing options offered by Shelley Signs for park signs means we can meet most objectives.

Technical Spec
A major concern in urban parks is vandalism and it is important park signs and entrance signs are designed and manufactured in materials that are robust and easy to clean.  For challenging park sign environments Shelley Signs often recommend Glass Reinforced Plastic, GRP , G.R.P. signs as a tough product.  The graphics are totally encapsulated into resin which is a hardwearing surface from which graffiti can be easily cleaned.  The surface withstands impact damage well and because of the method of construction water ingress cannot happen should the surface of the park sign be damaged.
Park signs in urban areas are often mounted in steel frames and on steel posts.  We normally specify mild steel, galvanised and sprayed to an agreed colour.

Park signs in rural areas offer a different challanges as they need to blend sympathetically with their surroundings rather than just be bullet proof.  While GRP is still a very suitable base material for rural park signs the framing structures can often be timber rather than steel.  Timber, oak or softwood as a framing structure provides an attractive feature for general park signs, park entrance signs and direction signs within the park.

Many parks have support groups or Friends of groups comprised of local residents.  These volunteers often undertake extensive amounts of work and find lockable notice boards a useful addition to their park signs.  Display cases either as standalone notice boards or integral to the main park sign provide an opportunity for members of these groups to communicate and promote their activities.

Extensive park development funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund has improved conditions of many of our urban and rural parks in recent years.  Upgrading the park signs, directional signs and interpretation has been an important part of these projects.  Parks wishing to enter for the Green Flag Awards also need to have refurbished their park signs – an ongoing programme is important to ensure they are clean, modern and match the Council marketing strategy.

Case Study
Blackpool Council have recently undertaken a major refurbishment of Stanley Park, one of the Flag Ship parks within the Borough.  This development included new park signs for each entrance and new directional finger posts.  The park signs were constructed with steel frames and included GRP printed signs and integral notice boards or display cases.  The fingerposts were produced in steel, galvanised and sprayed black.
