Overview of Church Signs

Churches and places of worship present particular challenges for welcome signage due to the sensitive nature of many sites, the historical importance of many and the mix of both urban and rural locations meaning an individual and bespoke approach must be taken for each sign. A combination of Welcome to signs, notice boards, display cases and changeable information to allow for service times add to the challenges.

Technical Spec

Shelley Signs work in a variety of materials including timber, plastic, PVC and GRP – this means we have an ideal range of materials to meet the varied demands of customers requiring signs for churches and other places of worship.

The main church entrance sign has often, historically, been hand painted. With technology available today signs for churches are better produced as printed panels, the personal touch being created in the artwork. We would recommend GRP, timber signs, plywood as a sign base or substrate as all these materials are ideal for printing and creating durable full colour images on an outdoor sign or display.

Most Churches have a requirement for displaying changeable information, sheets and posters in a display case or notice board. These cases can be produced in oak, softwood or aluminium and can be supplied with a separate header panel. All notice boards and display cases are hinged, lockable, usually glazed with shatterproof polycarbonate and supplied with pinboard backers.

Many Churches now display interpretative or interpretive information signs and panels to educate visitors about their history, archeology and standing in the local area. These interpretive signs can be designed to be located outdoors, internally or indoors or to be portable and used both internally and externally. Attractive oak lectern frames can be an ideal way to mount these signs. The graphic design is important and will ideally include pictures and a well written story of no more than 150 words per panel.

Case Study

St Peters Church in Stoke on Tern wanted a Welcome to the Church sign that matched the shape of an old notice board, matched the colour of the sandstone church walls and provided a flexible section to allow the promotion of service times through out the year. The solution was a post mounted sign produced in Glass Reinforced Plastic, GRP, G.R.P, which was printed in full colour. At the bottom of this sign was an aluminium sign system designed to hold temporary panels produced in 5mm thick Foamex – printed to match the colour of the top sign.
