Product Overview
Although the design and research are a vital process to creating a good interpretive panel and sign, the key focus should also be given to the framing and mounting, even more so when the interpretive boards are positioned on a lectern frame as they can have a major impact on the environment.
Technical Specification
A large number of interpretation panels and signs are usually mounted in lectern frames that are set at a 45-degree angle. This is found to be the most popular as it allows an audience of adults, children and wheelchair users to gain access and read the information on it easily.
Lectern frames in both country parks and rural environments are generally timber lectern frames, this is a popular choice as they blend in with their surroundings. Shelley Signs work with a variety of wood including pressure treated softwood and oak. If a client requests the cheaper option we would recommend softwood, although we do strongly recommend Oak if our client’s budget allows as it not only lasts longer but it looks sleek and stylish. All the oak used in our lectern frames are sourced from Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) suppliers and sawmills.
In urban areas, the need for a hard-wearing and easier to repair mount is of greater need. Lectern frames can be produced in either mild steel or stainless steel, all our mild steel lectern frames are galvanised and then sprayed to a colour that our client has chosen which meets their requirements. We use a spray finish instead of a powder coating due to vandalism, the spray finish is a lot easier to repair and touch up in the unfortunate case that is required.
If our client has chosen to have a stainless steel lectern frame for their outdoor interpretation sign it will usually have a brushed finish as we normally work with a Grade 316 stainless steel which is already supplied with a brushed finish.
Through our years of experience, we have found that interpretation for parks and interpretative boards are better mounted on vertical posts instead of lectern frames. Our clients will be given a wide choice of materials for both vertically and post mounted interpretive signs and boards. We can also supply a range of wall-mounted frames in oak, softwood, mild steel and stainless steel, we find wall-mounted interpretive panels to be a popular choice with our clients.
Case Study
Shelley Signs was commissioned by the City of Stoke on Trent to produce a wide range of outdoor interpretative panels or boards for the area of Burslem. As there were already other types of signs throughout the city and street furniture, our client requested that all interpretative panels or boards were to an exact specification, this meant that all panels and boards had to be supplied at a size of A1, and mounted in stainless steel with a brushed finish.
